I've always wanted to have a music room in my house - a place to call my own that I could unwind, take care of my artistic spirit, listen to music at obscene levels and simply fly from the every day pressures of life. In 2005, my girlfriend and I bought a house. A short time later, we were married and are now blessed with having two gorgeous miniature girls. Anyone in a similar situation knows that having children is about the many thing you'll ever do in your life and as they say, will no doubt transform your house into a home. You also may also have found that having kids transforms your home into a virtual play land of toys and sippy cups and diapers and... Somewhere along the line you contemplate that toys are like Gremlins: they multiply quickly and without logic and if you don't take control of the situation, any space you thought was yours will no longer be.
Early last Spring, we decided the only way our home was going to look like adults were positively inhabiting it was if we fulfilled, our basement and created some extra space for our new lives to fit in. A few months and several plumes of sheet rock dust later, we successfully added other 700 quadrilateral feet of living space to our home. Somehow during the process, I was able to convince my wife to let me turn my new office into an office/slash music room. While far from my dream jam space, I was able to put together a nice, multi-functional room where I can fly to do office work or keep my one-man-band together and happy.
Still, I would have been foolish to believe I would ever have complete peace and solace in a room I could truly call my own. When kids become part of your equation, the thought of "private space" stays just that - a thought and never quite resembles reality. Loud, amplified noise draw kids like moths to a flame, so having my music room invaded by miniature pink munchkins was inevitable.
Unless they have a deal with Disney to become the next Jonas Montana Money Machine, kids and costly guitars should never have the satisfaction of meeting. Keeping my high-priced tool away Pb&J-plagued fingers was becoming a challenge. I didn't want to lock away my guitars in their cases and throw them in a closet. The whole point of having a music room is to be able to play music when the mood strikes. Out of sight, out of mind is no life for a guitar.
In need of some ornament for my new room and inspired by something a friend of mind had done, I decided I was going to kill two birds with one stone (or in this case, guitar) and try hanging them on the wall to not only give my room some much-needed flavor, but also take off my guitars from any inherent destruction that would be caused by my personal two tyke wrecking crew.
Turned out, there were many dissimilar guitar wall hangers, hooks and even frames on the market, but my goal was to hang my guitars on the wall so they'd look great and be secure, yet still positively accessible. After a miniature trial and error and some online research, I found an expected guitar hanger from a business called Hercules that fulfilled, both. They were very simple to install, affordable (less than ) and best of all, had a positively cool locking gismo that secured the guitar without any difficult straps or need for a locksmith when the time came to pull them down and play.
Each guitar hanger took only ten minutes to setup and now my guitars are up and out of the way from the Danger Duo and look positively great at the same time. Even my wife is pleased with the new room decor and now we get compliments anytime friends are over (mostly from those with the same child-induced challenges as us).
There's nothing greater than the joy children bring into our lives but when it comes to small children and guitars, it's best the two don't have a connection until they're older. For me, that will probably be sometime around the "dating years", at which point I'll be locking myself in my music room and never coming out. Until then, I've found the excellent solution.

Steve and I have been advocates for drinking tap water for quite some time. Why? Tap water is regulated and good for you, and, we have a very hard time mental about how many plastic bottles previously containing "water" end up in landfill. Last year while visiting Paris and Amsterdam there was a noticeable movement in restaurants toward tap water, presented in a glass decanter, rather than selling a bottle of water. The production of plastic bottles to carry "filtered" or "remineralized tap water" last year alone used 17 million barrels of oil, produced 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide and used three times the amount of water used to fill each bottle. Shocking huh? Especially given that we live in a country where clean water is accessible everywhere.
The next big dilemma presents itself in the form of what type of reusable holder we should be putting our tap water into. Everybody has heard that Plastic amount 7 is Bad. It's a hard clear plastic found in many reusable containers, from what I have read, it's a catchall amount meaning the #7 plastic is made from some types of plastics some of which consist of Bpa and some of which do not. Still how are you to know?
Bpa is a artificial sex hormone similar to estrogen which is used to preserve plastics, however, it has been known to leak into the container's contents. Scientists studying Bpa in animal research have found it can cause discrete condition problems together with cancer, diabetes, hyperactivity, obesity and early onset of puberty.
So we play safe and rule it out altogether which is what the Fda in Canada has done declaring Bpa a Toxin. Yay Canada!
With Baby P on the way I have begun to unmistakably look for Bpa free bottles, sippy cups, utensils, pacifiers and toys. While it will be fine if Baby P lives a lifetime singing show tunes I unmistakably don't want to be buying Baby P's first training bra at age six, or carpooling to chemo treatments instead of hockey practice, if I can help forestall it.
So what can you do?
If you are heading out for the day, pack a bottle of water to take along. There are a amount of great Bpa or Bispenol-A Free reusable stainless steel bottles on the store specifically made for toting water. Fellowships like Klean Kanteen,and Sigg, just to name two brands who have taken the lead on the store in eco friendly reusable containers for kids and adults.
For baby items look for the Bpa Free logo in the packaging. I recently bought a set of spoons made by Munchkin who had a big Bpa free emblem on the front of the package. Although, not all of their products are Bpa free. Particular notice is still at the buyers discretion. Other great Fellowships manufacture Bpa Free products like bottles, sippy cups and pacifiers for babies are Born Free, Avent, Evenflo glass bottles, Dr.Brown's glass bottles, thinkbaby, Nuby and Sassy Mam.

How do you know when your child is ready to move from the crib to a big bed?
Each child is different, some parents can hold off on this transition until age 3 while others show signs of readiness by as early as 18 months. Keeping protection in mind, it is time to make the move if your child is demonstrating the quality to get out of the crib on their own. The twins began climbing / jumping out at age 19 months. We have wood floors in the nursery, development this move a priority to beds a priority.
What are the things I should do to prepare for this move?
Now's the time to make doubly sure baby /toddler proofing is fully ready for a child (or two children in this case) being alone and free in the room. Regain any furniture that could tip of climbed on, add drawer locks where needed, seek for missing plug covers, make any cords unreachable, check blind and curtain cords, and place a protection gate at their door to prevent wandering. I'd also advise you consider a placing video baby monitor in the room especially for twins or more. A video monitor enables you to view what they are doing without going in and upsetting the mood unnecessarily. On the flip side, it can also show you times you should go in such as when one is sitting on the other's leg. We are using the Safety1st Prism Video Baby Monitor to keep an eye on our twins when alone in their room and are quite pleased with it.
How does one ease into this big move from crib to bed?
Some experts advise you start moderately by napping in new bed and sleeping overnight in the crib, but sometimes this isn't possible especially with twins. The space required for all those beds commonly isn't there. Plus, if you are development the move due to protection concerns, why delay?
I'd advise development the new beds as exciting, special, and comfortingly familiar as possible. If your move is to a toddler bed, use the same bedding, but add a extra new pillowcase and or blanket. If you are consuming your child to a twin or larger bed, consider allowing your child to pick out the new sheets or development an accent pillow from the old bedding.

Toddler Beds or Twin Beds?
We personally went with reasonable toddler beds from Ikea for the twins. Our cribs positively change to twin beds, but we decided not to move level into those just yet. We felt the twins would benefit from the extra room to play right now. We also liked the smaller cozier aspect of toddler beds since they are development this move fairly young.
We currently have the two toddler beds pushed together with a bolster / body style pillow in the middle (not pictured) to keep them from falling in the crack or rolling on the other. We positively re-purposed our two much beloved nursing pillows for this bolster, by placing both nesting pillows in a single body pillowcase. If you do determine to go with twin beds, look into bed rails to keep them from rolling off. Other options are lots of pillows on the floor or even just using the mattress at first.
Other basic needs?
Don't forget to leave a spot in bed or near the bed for other relieve items your child might want. Their stuffed dog, beloved blankie, pacifier if still being used, and even a water filled sippy cup by the bed. A nightlight is also a good idea, although my plug into the socket style seem to be a bit too consuming to consuming toddlers. I just spotted one of those "take with you" style nightlights by Munchkin in a dog style the other day. I may just have to hit Target to snag a combine as Valentine gifts to the slight guys. (That way, I can place them on a dresser and hide the cord.)
Last slight tips?
Stick with your evening / bedtime habit as much as possible. Effect all of the same procedures for going to bed as you would when they were going down in their cribs. Only now, possibly you can sit on the edge of the bed to sing or read.
Our habit goes something like this... After dinner, daddy and one of the siblings bring the twins upstairs to bathe, put on jammies, and brush teeth while the rest of us do downstairs clean up. The twins then come into our room to play quietly while the house plays with them and catches up a tad on a beloved T.V. Show. ultimately the twins mellow fully and we move into their room for storytime and some cuddles.
Remember this is a process that takes time. I've done this with my 3 older children and now it is time for the twins. Each child was distinct and thus each transition took a distinct distance of time and had unique adjustments that had to be made. Remain patient and consistent, good luck!
